Salesforce Now Owns Fin: What Intercom and Service Cloud Teams Should Do

Prerna Singh· Salesforce Consultant, SAASKOOL30 September 202611 min readLast updated 5 October 2026

Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin, the company formerly called Intercom, on 10 September 2026. Nothing either company has published changes how you buy or run Fin yet: it is still sold on its own at US$0.99 per outcome as at September 2026, still connects to Service Cloud, and is now also named as an Agentforce agent.

This is for small support teams on Intercom, Service Cloud or both. Everything below is as at 30 September 2026; where neither company has said anything, we say "not announced".

What did Salesforce buy, and when did the deal close?

The whole company behind Intercom and Fin, for about US$3.6 billion in cash, closing on 10 September 2026.

Salesforce announced the agreement on 15 June 2026 at "approximately $3.6 billion", and expected to close in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2027. Its quarterly report, filed on 27 August 2026, names the target as Intercom, Inc. ("Fin") and the price as "approximately $3.6 billion in cash". The close announcement came earlier than that June estimate and repeats "an established global customer base of more than 30,000 companies".

On 12 May 2026 the company renamed itself Fin, and its CEO Eoghan McCabe wrote that "The name Intercom will still live on as the name of our customer service software platform". Intercom is the helpdesk; Fin is the AI agent and the company. Salesforce now owns both.

What has Salesforce said about Fin's product, pricing and brand since the close?

Very little beyond continuity. The close release says Fin "will continue to serve its customers, advance its AI agent capabilities" as part of Salesforce's AI Labs, and Fin's own post repeats it.

Salesforce frames Fin as the small-team option: its Help Agent announcement (25 June) calls Fin "a customer agent platform purpose-built for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs)". Fin was one of seven named agents in Salesforce's Dreamforce announcements, as our Dreamforce 2026 roundup records, and Salesforce's 28 September recap says it "connects to your Salesforce org". Neither page names an edition or a price.

What does Fin cost compared with Agentforce's Help Agent?

Fin lists US$0.99 per outcome; Salesforce lists US$2 per Help Agent resolution. They bill different events, so the lower sticker is not automatically the lower bill.

Sources: Fin pricing, Fin's Salesforce help article and Salesforce's Agentforce pricing page, each checked against a September 2026 Wayback copy.

Update, 5 October 2026: Fin's pricing page now shows the Intercom helpdesk seat at US$19 a month on some visits and US$29 on others, which its page code labels an experiment; archived copies we checked up to 3 October all showed US$29. The US$0.99 per outcome price, 50-outcome minimum and billable outcomes are unchanged. Since mid-September, some visitors to Intercom's pricing page have also seen a version that charges nothing if the customer asks for a human, refunds an outcome if the conversation is reopened, and lists Fin Voice at US$1.99 per voice outcome.

Three things the headline prices hide:

  • Handoffs can be billable on Fin. A Fin outcome includes a "Procedure handoff: Fin completes a Procedure you've configured to hand off to a human", though a conversation "simply passed to your team without an outcome" is free. Help Agent charges nothing when the customer asks for a human.
  • The minimum is described two ways. The pricing page shows a 50-outcome monthly minimum (US$49.50 of outcomes); Fin's help centre says "$49/month including 50 AI resolutions". Get the billing definition in writing.
  • The arithmetic is simple, the inputs are not. At 300 billable events a month, Fin is US$297 and Help Agent is US$600. What counts as billable on your traffic is the real variable.

How does Fin connect to Service Cloud today?

Through Fin's own connector, which keeps Service Cloud as the system of record. It is an integration, not part of Service Cloud, and Fin says it "has managed availability".

Fin's setup article lists four steps: sync your Knowledge articles, connect over OAuth, customise the greeting and hand-off, then test and go live.

  • A package in your org. It adds four custom Case fields (Fin involvement, resolution state, spam and conversation ID) and a permission set with create, read and edit on Case, and read and edit on Contact and Account, per Fin's package article.
  • Data both ways. Fin pulls "all of your Contact, Case, and Account fields" and writes "field changes, transcripts, and summaries" back to fields you approve. You report on Fin's cases with Salesforce reports.
  • Channels. Cases from email and web forms, and live chat in Fin Messenger handing off to Salesforce In-App Messaging. As at September, the article listed Salesforce Messenger, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Android and iOS as "Coming soon". Fin Voice logs calls as Cases.
  • Prerequisites. Fin's permissions article requires API access enabled in your org, the Approve Uninstalled Connected Apps permission for the connecting user, and Chatter with Feed Tracking. Setup needs Salesforce admin access.
  • Edition. Fin says you can deploy it "without adding per-agent costs or upgrading to a higher platform tier", but its Copilot article warns "You may need to upgrade your Salesforce tier" for Copilot, which relies on Apex.

Running the Intercom helpdesk with Salesforce for sales is a different integration. Intercom's Salesforce app article limits it to the Advanced and Expert plans, syncs Leads, Contacts, Accounts and Tasks with "a delay of up to 5 minutes", and needs "A Salesforce edition with API access, such as Enterprise or Unlimited edition". Check your edition first; our integration service covers that assessment.

Should you stay on Intercom, run Fin on Service Cloud, or move to Agentforce?

Decide by where your human agents work today, not by the acquisition.

Your setup todaySensible defaultMain trade-off
Intercom helpdesk with Fin; Salesforce for sales or not at allStayTwo systems; cases live in Intercom, not Salesforce
Service Cloud, no AI agent yetPilot Fin or Help Agent on a slice of trafficHelp Agent works inside the platform; Fin adds a separate workspace but no seats
Service Cloud with Fin already connectedKeep it runningA managed-availability connector; watch for announcements
Support split across Intercom and Service CloudConsolidate later, on your timetablePaying for two helpdesks; no migration path has been announced

Staying on Intercom with Fin. Nothing announced forces a move, Fin's per-outcome price did not change across the close, and the leadership is in place. Our view: acquisitions can shift roadmaps later, so keep contract terms short until Salesforce says more.

Running Fin alongside Service Cloud. Fin says "No migration is required", your team keeps working cases in Salesforce, and you pay per outcome. The cost is a second admin console, a connector that needs sales approval, and channels such as WhatsApp that Fin still listed as coming soon on Salesforce.

Moving to Agentforce on Service Cloud. One platform, and Salesforce says Help Agent grounds "automatically on your Salesforce Knowledge". Casey, which Salesforce's 11 September story calls "your help agent", covers "voice, SMS, WhatsApp, and web chat". It assumes Service Cloud and Knowledge are in good shape; our Winter '27 guide for service teams covers this release.

When should you not switch anything yet?

Most small teams should hold this quarter if:

  • Your current setup works. No end date or price change has been announced for Fin or Intercom.
  • Your knowledge base is thin. Both agents answer from your articles. Our AI-ready data checklist comes first.
  • You would be switching on a vendor average. Fin quotes a 76% average resolution rate; Salesforce says Agentforce resolved 70 percent of 4.3 million enquiries on its own help site. Both are vendor figures, not forecasts for yours.
  • You are waiting for a Fin price inside Agentforce. None has been published.

What to do instead: note which system holds your cases, export three months of conversation volume, ask each vendor to define a billable resolution in writing, and re-check both pricing pages each quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Salesforce buy Intercom or Fin? Both, in effect. The company renamed itself from Intercom to Fin in May 2026, and Intercom stays as the name of its helpdesk product. Salesforce's quarterly SEC filing names the target as Intercom, Inc. (Fin). The deal was announced on 15 June 2026 at about US$3.6 billion in cash and closed on 10 September 2026.

Has Fin's pricing changed since Salesforce bought it? Not as at 30 September 2026. Fin's pricing page showed US$0.99 per outcome both before and after the close, with a minimum of 50 outcomes a month when Fin runs on another helpdesk such as Salesforce. Neither company has announced a new Fin price or an Agentforce price for Fin. Fin's and Intercom's pricing pages now show some visitors different seat prices and terms; see the 5 October 2026 update under the cost table.

Can I still use Fin with Service Cloud? Yes. Fin's Salesforce connector answers cases from email and web forms and live chats in Fin Messenger, syncs your Knowledge articles, and writes transcripts, summaries and field updates back to Salesforce. Fin lists the integration as managed availability, so access goes through its sales team.

Is Fin cheaper than the Agentforce Help Agent? Per unit, yes: US$0.99 per Fin outcome against US$2 per Help Agent resolution on Salesforce's pricing page. But Fin also bills a Procedure handoff you configure, while Salesforce charges only when Help Agent resolves an issue start to finish. Model your own conversation mix before comparing totals.

Should I move from Intercom to Service Cloud because of the acquisition? Not because of the acquisition alone. Salesforce says Fin will continue to serve its customers, and nothing announced as at 30 September 2026 ends Intercom or Fin. Move when your own needs justify it, such as wanting service and sales records on one platform.
